Thiruvananthapuram: Indian Union Muslim League state general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty yesterday alleged that there was a communal agenda at work behind the repeated allegations against top leaders of his party in recent times.
"There are some vested interests with a communal agenda who feel that they can make political capital by voicing allegations against the leadership of IUML. This is certainly not in the interests of the state," Kunhalikutty said.
The former industries minister who had to step down following allegations of his involvement in a sex scandal, said that one recent tendency was for these vested interests was to "propagate that whenever anything went wrong anywhere in the world, it was the handiwork of the IUML".
Speaking to media persons, Kunhalikutty said the habit of blaming the IUML for all kinds of issues including mineral sand mining, sex rackets and the express highway was the handiwork of these characters.
"Those who aim to make gains out of such baseless allegations, however, do not think of the long-term consequences of their action," he said.
"These kinds of allegations have normally been witnessed in the northern parts of the country. Making such communally sensitive statements in Kerala can create serious damage," he said.
Hitting out at the Communists, Kunhalikutty said, "In the past, the Communist parties stood up against such communal tilts. Now, that has changed. Wherever a cracker bursts, the blame is put on the IUML."
Referring to the contentious issue of the ice cream parlour sex case, Kunhalikutty said it was "not an issue in the forthcoming assembly election". "The courts have rejected it and only some political opponents are trying to rake up the matter again," he said.
