Gaza: Palestinian Prime Minister Esmail Haniya, seeking to offset growing unrest over the non-payment of salaries to government employees, yesterday promised that banks would begin making payments in the next day or two. Setting a date for the first time, Haniya said payments for those earning 1,500 shekels a month (Dh1,219) would begin today or tomorrow, and down payments of 1,500 shekels would be made to those with higher salaries in the same timeframe. The money is expected to come in part from internal Palestinian tax revenues collected by the government and will depend on the banks honouring the government's cheques. "Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow the banks will begin paying the salaries and down payments," Haniya said. His pledge comes a day after members of the Palestinian security forces protested over the non-payment of wages.
