Dubai: A candidate for the Federal National Council elections yesterday said she wants to be a role model and representative for Emirati women in the council.

Capitalising on her role as a mother, wife and an accomplished woman, Dr Meshgan Al Awar started her election campaign yesterday with the slogan: 'What is difficult we do today, what is impossible we do tomorrow'.

Currently the director of Research and Studies Centre at Dubai Police Academy, Dr Meshgan is also the secretary general of the higher committee of the Zayed International Prize for the Environment as well as the managing editor of the Society and Environment magazine.

Active worker

Having represented the UAE at various agencies of the United Nations and the Arab League, she describes herself as an "active environmentalist".

Dr Meshgan paid special tribute to her family and husband, whom she called the source of her "inner strength", often becoming emotional while speaking of them. A message of support was screened from two of her sons, who are studying in the United States.

Claiming to come from a middle class family, she said she understands the concerns of the average citizen.

"I bring to the table experience in the field of applied science, the environment, women's issues, family affairs and a deep understanding of the dreams and aspirations of ordinary citizens," she said.

Dr Meshgan said she would work to strengthen the council's role, and "coordinate with the Rulers" in making policy if elected.

She promised to announce her agenda soon.
