Dubai: Gower Song, who sprang a surprise in the Group 3 Dubai City of Gold on Super Thursday, was up with larks on the training track this morning, stretching her legs shortly after 6.30am, an exercise which, while only routine, brought a smile to the face of her trainer, David Elsworth.
"The mare is in super form and looks magnificent," declared Elsworth, gazing at his stable-star with justifiable pride ahead of her date in the Dubai Sheema Classic.
"She has been here since January and has acclimatised really well," he told the Dubai Racing Club.
Speed and stamina
"She has speed and stamina, and, if anything, she seems to have improved for her last run.
"Obviously, she is stepping up two grades, but she has earned her place in the field, and I think she has a great chance of finishing in the money."
Those sentiments were echoed by seven time UAE champion jockey Ted Durcan, who is back in the saddle, having been unavailable for the Dubai City of Gold, in which Gower Song was ridden by Richards Hills.
Durcan, who had partnered Gower Song in her three previous races at the Dubai International Racing Carnival, said: "She is flying and has improved with every race.
"She has thrived in the sunshine, and, though she has a bit to find on official ratings, she has a lot better chance than her odds suggest.
"When a filly starts to improve there is no knowing where it will end, and I think she has what it takes to ruffle a few feathers and finish in the frame."
