Each day Tabloid! will bring you a tip, giving you a quick and easy insight about the popular sport. Whether you play or not, read and understand that this is a sport for all.
Work on your volleys
Without question the baseline is where today's players do most of their hitting at every level, though, the easiest place to finish a point is at the net.
Even if you're a solid player from the back of the court, it's important to get to the net occasionally to keep your opponent off-balance.
Clark Francis Tennis Academy coach Doug gives us the low-down on the volley.
He said: "One of the most important aspects of volleying is holding the racket so you have the same grip on both the forehand and the backhand. Beginners should hold the racket like they're shaking hands with it. Experiment with your grip to see what you find most comfortable for hitting volleys off either side.
"When it comes to volleying, less is more. You want as little motion with your racket and body as possible. Big swings and lots of movement lead to inconsistent results. "Make sure you start with a stable base and your racket should only go as far back as your shoulder turn takes it.
"To hit the volley, step forward and make contact out in front of you. Use a short, punching swing that's no more than 1-2ft long. The power comes from the step forward." For information about tennis tips or lessons at the academy call 04-2824540.
