Direct from the venue, we bring you the lowdown on your views on the tennis.

Rose Erdelan, 78, a retired American, said: "We've been to Madrid, and now we're here in Dubai for the tennis, and when we get back we'll be going to Palm Springs for Indian Wells. We live in California, so we're here just for the tennis and sightseeing — it's like a fairytale in Dubai. I love Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Jelena Jankovic, I don't know if she's playing though. My friend here loves Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova. I used to play tennis and I love it, I love to watch them, they're just so wonderful."

Favourite players: Greg Moran, Pete Sampras.

Andreas Henschen, 33, a German university lecturer, said: "We've come to get tickets and we happened to be in Dubai when the tennis is on. I'm medium-interested in tennis and thought that as the opportunity is here, we'd try to get tickets. I'd definitely like to see Roger Federer and I was reading a bit about some of the players, and the Serbian girl Ana Ivanovic, should be very good. Of course I wouldn't mind seeing any of the top players. This will be the first time I've seen a live tennis tournament."

Favourite player: Serena Williams.

Australian entrepreneur David, 26, a Dubai resident, said: "It's difficult to pick up tickets! I haven't been to the Dubai championships before, but I have been to the Australian Open. I don't know who's playing yet, but I thought I'd try and get tickets. I like tennis because it's a very good spectator sport."

Favourite players: Pat Cash, John McEnroe.
