Dubai: The 2006 Dubai Terry Fox Run will take place on January 27, as an official Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) sports event, the organisers have announced.

More than Dh500,000 was raised for cancer research programmes during last year's event and Organising Committee Chairperson Ara Sahakian says the aim is to surpass this record in 2006.

"The last Terry Fox Run held in Dubai attracted a record 12,000 individuals who walked, ran, jogged, cycled, roller-bladed or wheeled along the course, and more importantly, all of whom donated generously to this very worthy cause," Ara Sahakian said.

"Our goal is to make this year's run even more fun and entertaining for the whole family, so it will for the first time finish in the Creek Park where participants will find live entertainment, free food, drinks and giveaways."

Since its inception, the Dubai Terry Fox Run has been held under the pat-ronage of Shaikh Ahmad bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates Group.

The organising committee members are volunteers, and services and materials are donated.

All the proceeds will be used to fund cancer research programmes at approved institutions in the UAE including the UAE University in Al Ain.
