Dubai: Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar and Syrian Olympic Gold Medal winner Ghada Shouaa will both be on hand at a charity sports auction being held tonight for Dubai Cares.
Another auction organised by a Dubai-based company will see the handprints of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and his sons up for sale, it was announced yesterday. Zabeel Investments is taking an innovative approach to raising funds by auctioning off the handprints in aid of the initiative to educate over 1 million children.
Tonight's sports auction, held under the auspices of Shaikh Rashid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the Dubai Sports Council, is expected to generate over $1 million (Dh3.67 million) for the campaign, according to organisers.
Among the 32 items going under the hammer is a football boot worn by Khalid Esmail when he scored the UAE's goal against Germany in the 1990 World Cup, and the UAE's first Olympic gold medal, won by Shaikh Ahmad Bin Hasher Al Maktoum for the double trap shooting competition at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Other lots include running shoes worn by Shouaa when she won the Heptathlon gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and a jersey signed by Brazilian football legend Pele.
Meanwhile, software company CA yesterday announced a donation of over Dh73,000, and the ITL Group pledged one per cent of retail sales generated over two months in their Cosmos showrooms towards the campaign.
