Dubai: Argentina's Santiago Gomez Cora, the all-time leading try scorer in IRB Sevens history, is to sit out the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens later this week after suffering a serious leg injury. The player has been central to the South American side's rise to prominence in recent seasons with a remarkable tally of 121 tries. But he will miss the opening legs of the new IRB World Series in Dubai and the following week in George, South Africa, because of a rupture to the right thigh. Argentina, who finished fifth overall last season, will also be without Juan Martin Berberian for personal reasons, leading to call-ups for Alejandro Bar and Gonzalo Camacho. Australia have also been forced into a late change after Anthony Sauer suffered a badly broken nose in a club training session with the Reds.
The highly rated winger accidentally clashed heads with Nic Berry, leading to a recall for full-back Arthur Little who first appeared for Australia's sevens side in 2002. Samoa, meanwhile, have named the experienced Vale Mai and Alapasa Cordtz in their squad of 12 for the tournament but will be without David Lemi and Brian Lima, two stars of last season who are now plying their trade in the English Premiership for Bristol.
