The following is a statement from Dubai Water and Electricity Authority concerning the power cut in Dubai.

Dubai blackout
"A sudden failure in one of the main Transmission Sub-Station at Jebel Ali Power Station caused the power failure to the city of Dubai at around 09.47hrs on 9th May 2005.

"The emergency and maintenance teams of DEWA were immediately dispatched to attend the fault and started with immediate effect the gradual restoration of the power supply, starting with the vital power requirements to hospitals, trade centres, dry dock and other main areas within less than two and a half hours.

"Power supply was restored to most of the Deira area, while the majority of Jebel Ali areas were not affected with this disturbance.

"Dubai airport was not affected as well as they were having their own standby generator. At this time ongoing restoration of power is in effect to the rest of the areas.

"Dubai Electricity and Water Authority would like to extend its apologies to its consumers for the inconvenience caused due to this unexpected failure.
