One motorist said: "Trade Centre Roundabout was a complete nightmare.

"There were cars coming from all directions and it was very dangerous."

Businesses were also sent into turmoil after staff in offices across Dubai were sent home because of a lack of power.

Landline telephones were not affected however mobile telephones were unable to pick up signal in various locations.

Water supply was also cut in some areas of the cities including the Springs, Meadows and Lakes.

Lifts jolted to a standstill in the hotels across the city including the Crown Plaza and Emirates Towers where guests were forced to use the stairs.

Residents, visitors and businesspeople gathered outside their offices and discussed the incident as it unfolded.

Dubai Police Cpl. Nasser Musa said a power cable had caught fire at the Jebel Ali Power Station, but the official UAE agency WAM later quoted an official as saying there was no fire.

The last major power cut in Dubai happened in 1999 after a major generator failed, but the power was only out for around one hour.
