Sugar and spice and all things nice have been keeping children out of trouble at Mall of the Emirates. Treat and Bake Week was launched as part of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) Food Surprises last week and proved an instant hit.
With more than 100 children involved, workshops on cake decorating, biscuit tower building and much more attracted the crowds.
Thomas Sahnder, 8, from South Africa, was tucking into a mountain of biscuits throughout most of the event one evening.
He said, "I love biscuits more than anything. They are the best and I would eat them all the time if I could. We had to make biscuit towers but mine kept falling down. Then sometimes I would secretly sneak one and eat it under the table when nobody was looking so mine was never going to be the tallest. My favourite biscuits are ones with chocolate on — maybe chocolate-chip cookies."
Lots of fun
Chocolate sauce, Smarties, hundreds and thousands, sprinkles and jam were the favourites when it came to piling as much on top of a fairy cake as physically possible.
Richard Manncher, 12, said he never thought shopping for new school shoes would have turned out to be so much fun.
He said, "I had been practically dragged to the mall to get new shoes to go back to school with and I was so bored. Then we stumbled upon the biscuit and cake workshops and now I don't want to leave until the end. It was lots of fun and I ate lots of chocolate and cakes."
Crepes were dressed with cream, sweets and sauces to vaguely resemble smiley faces, grinning suns and even snowflakes. One child even attempted to make Modhesh from giant pancakes.
Outsome
While some parents agreed the supervisors were brave for even considering arming young children with such products, others laughed as their little ones sneaked what they could from the array of decorative options in front of them.
But regardless of what was produced and how impressive each creation looked, the final outcome was pretty much always the same: child + cake + chocolate sauce = a big chocolaty smile and very messy hands and clothes!
