Kelly Holmes and Carl Lewis will be given a run for their money with children invited to battle it out at Dubai's very own Kids Olympic Games.

The seven-day event, which takes place at Dubai's Reef Mall from August 16 to 22, hopes to showcase some of the best sporting talent among children aged from just 12 months to 10 years. And with attractive prizes awarded to the winners of the various contests, it won't just be the children who are aiming high.

Organised by Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS), the initiative has attracted more than 500 participants at previous events. Anyone who wants to take part in this year's event must register their interest by Sunday.

Little athletes will be entered to compete in events from baby crawling and tricycle races to rattle throwing and remote-control car races.

A huge success in past years, the sporting event encompasses a series of competitions for children of different age groups and is always one of the star attractions of the DSS mall events.

Excitement

The majority of the contests and events are aimed at involving the whole family in some way.

A spokesman said: "While the kids participate in the competitions, their parents have the opportunity to cheer them on. There is as much drama, excitement and fun as in any major sport as you watch the little athletes reach the finishing line.

"Then, like any good sporting event, there will be plenty of attractive prizes too, including gift vouchers worth Dh700, Dh500 and Dh300."

Entry is restricted to 20 competitors per category and the deadline for enrolment is Sunday.
