Enjoy summer with a series of activities planned at Modhesh Fun City, Dubai Airport Expo. Remember the City, while clearly fun, is not only a place for children to play. It also gives them an opportunity to learn and broaden their young imaginations.
At the Arts and Crafts zone, for example, children can make their own drawings and crafts – and be proud of their achievements.
The zone teaches children to paint, cut and paste and work with different shapes and colours. Maitha Abdullah works at the zone. She talked of her programme.
Cut to shape
"I work every summer at Modhesh Fun City, teaching children art and craft. I teach them basics such as how to cut and paste pieces of paper and how to shape the papers into interesting forms such as shirts, frames, animals and fruit baskets," Maitha said.
"If you know the structure of something you can always re-create its form. It is simple but needs practice and patience. Children can take home the things they make for free."
Aisha Khalifah, another Emirati instructor, is participating for the first time in Modhesh Fun City.
"I teach kids simple handicrafts like showing them how to make good designs out of paper such as cups, T-shirts, bags, toys, carpets and frames. We use different lengths and colours of ribbons so that children can have whatever design they want," Aisha said.
Kids talk
We spoke to some children busy at Arts & Crafts zone. This is what they said.
Mustafa Erfan, 13, Egyptian: "Arts and Crafts zone is my favourite area in Modhesh Fun City because I like drawing. This programme really adds to the little I know of paintings. I also like to make different things and shapes out of paper. My room is decorated with arts and crafts I have made myself."
Hiba Ahmad, 10, Emirati: "I'm always attracted to arts and crafts whether in school or at Modhesh Fun City. I enjoy making my own crafts with their different shapes and forms. I have learnt new things from Modhesh Fun City. When I go back to school I'm going to discuss them with my teacher and use them as part of what I learn in class."
Kathy Ashraf, 12, Egyptian: " I like the Arts and Crafts zone. It helps me draw better and I like to meet my friends here too."
Parents' view
Khawla Salem from the UAE: "This year the Modhesh Fun City is bigger and better. Many more educational activities have been added this summer."
Mohammad Hashem from Egypt: "The place is cosy and the activities are suitable for kids. In fact, everything is well organised this year."
Christina Nasif from Lebanon: "Modhesh Fun City is great and well co-ordinated. I encourage my kids to experience anything that helps to increase the level of their knowledge and awareness. To tell you the truth, I feel Dubai works tirelessly to surprise us with new events and activities. I am seriously considering residing permanently in Dubai because I find it an advancing city."
Get framed!
Meanwhile, you can have your photographs clicked with Modhesh at his Studio in Modhesh Fun City. With the help of professional photographers, kids as well as adults can now frame all their favourite memories. Visitors can also have photographs taken at any spot in the Fun City. The developed pictures are handed over the same day in the size of your choice. You could even have posters made.
History on wheels
We met 85-year-old Indian Wahid Ali Wakil, the oldest visitor to Modhesh Fun City. The wheel-chair bound octagenarian is a former businessman from Mumbai and loves to be with his family in all their outings.
