Creations 2008 opened at BurJuman on Thursday with fashion shows by Lebanese designers Antoine Al Kareh and Akl Fakih. The fashion event organised by Dubai Shopping Festival in association with BurJuman aims to showcase the talent of upcoming and established fashion designers from the region.
Eighteen designers of different nationalities will display their collections, with two fashion shows taking place daily at BurJuman until February 22.
Elegant
Day two of Creations 2008 featured elegant evening wear by Dubai-based Pakistani designer Salma Khan and well-known Indian designer Ranna Gill.
Salma Khan, who featured in the amateur category, showcased an elegant range of evening dresses, gowns and prom dresses in a wide palette ranging from bright red, purple, gold and silver to white and black.
"This is my third year at Creations. I love to be part of this event because it gives me an opportunity to present my couture creations to a wider audience and show people that I can cater to all ages, nationalities and budgets," said Salma.
"All my outfits are handmade in Dubai and last year I was proud to represent the UAE at the Prêt-á-Porter show in Paris," she added.
Throughout the week-long event, amateur designers will showcase their work on the ramp at 7pm, while the creations of established designers will be on the ramp at 8pm.
This year, Creations is also providing amateur designers the exciting opportunity to participate in Miami Fashion Week. All nine amateur designers have been invited to showcase their two best creations in a special show that will take place at 8.30pm on February 22. Beth Sabol, director of Miami Fashion Week, will be on the panel of knowledgeable judges that will select the winner.
Fashion hub
Suhaila Gobash, DSF events manager, said: "Providing an opportunity to talented fashion designers is among the initiatives of DSF to contribute to the wider aim of promoting Dubai as the region's fashion hub.
"Following the overwhelming success of Dubai Fashion 2008, we are now looking forward to another edition of Creations. Besides UAE-based designers and fashion design students, this year the event has attracted participants from India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Cyprus, UK, US and Australia affirming the event's growing reputation."
