You could hear a pin drop in Safa Park as 1,000 people gathered to play the longest game of Chinese whispers in the world.

"Shushhhh, we're trying to break a record," said 12-year-old Martha Bagden as she stood as still as a statue waiting for the whisper to reach her down the line.

The participants stood hand-in-hand and attempted to break the current world record of 814 people as part of the DSF record-breaking festival yesterday.

The attempt is one of six records being judged by the Guinness World Records committee in Safa Park this year including the world's largest bed, wallet and inflatable as well as the longest line of footprints and the biggest pillow fight.

The DSF world records venture 2007 aims to unite communities across Dubai to portray the global theme of "one world, one family, one festival".

The majority of participants in the Chinese whispers attempt arrived by bus from Our Own Indian School, Dubai, which sent an impressive 800 students to take part in the event.

Best time

Pupil Farah Al Ali, aged 14, was grinning from ear to ear throughout the attempt which lasted for a number of hours.
She said: "This is so much fun. I am having the best time ever and I can't believe we might even break a world record. That is something everyone should have been involved in."

The largest pillow fight, taking place today, will involve a massive 4,500 participants and will bring the 45-day long DSF to a close.

Organised by and in aid of Foresight — a Dubai-based charity that helps people with the heritable eye disorder, retinitis pigmentosa — the DSF attempt relies on members of the public to get involved.

Battle

People of all ages are being encouraged to come along from 4pm to pick up a pillow and go into battle from 4.30pm sharp. The aim is to beat the current record for the most participants in a pillow fight, which stands at 3,648.

Members of the public can buy a pillow for Dh25 and all proceeds will go to Foresight. The pillow fight must last for at least one minute in order to make it into the record books.

All the pillows have been donated by furniture store, Home Centre, and will be given to labour camps after the event.

It's a whisper

The game of Chinese whispers involves the whispering of a secret sentence beginning with the first player, along a line of players until the last person says the sentence out loud. To complete the game successfully, the last player shouts the sentence and the first player must confirm that every word is correct.

The sentences spoken by the first and the last participants have to match in order for a new world record to be created.
