With over 150 stands, this year's Carpet Oasis in the Airport Expo has up to 200,000 carpets for sale. The Carpet Oasis, organised by the Dubai Ports and Customs Authority, has garnered sales of Dh7,879,000 and sold 1,500 carpets within the first 10 days of its opening.
As a major attraction of the Dubai Shopping Festival, it features a stunning array of the exquisite carpets featuring beautiful artwork. While some are made of wool, most are silk woven and come largely from Iran as well as Afghanistan.
With sizes and costs to suit any budget, you could spend just Dh30 for a small table mat or break the bank for an antique silk Persian carpet up to 50 metres in length for a cool Dh1 million.
Worth a look
"The carpets here are all so beautiful," said Sussanah Rami, a visitor to the Oasis. "It is understandable that not everyone can afford to buy, but it is definitely worth a look."
Mohammad Ali, from Soltanpour Furniture, has a stand exhibiting framed picture carpets. Each picture depicts fables and tales from ancient Persia.
Soltanpour also makes carpeted pictures of royalty from the UAE and other GCC countries.
Ali said: "Our pictures give people something to think about, especially those with Persian stories. The carpets are made to be hung on the walls instead of people just having regular paintings."
Good sales
Abdurahman Eesa, head of the organising committee for Carpet Oasis, said: "We expect the total sales at Carpet Oasis during DSF to reach Dh50 million and an equivalent amount of sales agreed upon between merchants bringing the total to Dh100 million. The sales this year will exceed last year's actual sales by Dh10 million."
But one salesman felt visitors were experiencing fatigue with so much to choose from. Shoukat Khan said: "We have many beautiful carpets but because there are so many on display, by the time people come to our stand they are too tired to look. We still have many days to go and we would really like people to come and see what we have to offer — even if you don't want to buy, at least take a look."
