The Al Fazz'a Cultural Championship, held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, was officially launched on December 28 at the Al Meedan theatre at the Global Village.
The championship, which is one of the main cultural events of DSF 2006-07, was initiated in 2002. It has played an important role in popularising traditional sports among the younger generation of UAE nationals and preserving the rich culture and heritage of the country. It has also successfully showcased the UAE's culture and traditions to DSF visitors from around the world.
Abdullah Hamdan Bin Dalmook, general supervisor of the Al Fazz'a Championship, announced that on the advice of Shaikh Hamdan, two new competitions have been added to the event this year.
Dog racing
"Besides shooting, falconry and Al Youla, we have included dog racing and diving, which are also part of our tradition. All dog owners are welcome to participate in the dog races and competitors aged 13 onwards can participate in the diving competitions. We invite people of all nationalities to take part in the Championship events," said Bin Dalmook.
The shooting competitions will take place at the Dubai Police shooting range in Al Ruwayya from January 4 to 6. Falconry experts will showcase their skills in tournaments to be held from January 11 to January 19. The dog racing contests will take place from January 25 to 27 and the diving competitions will begin on February 2.
The Al Youla competitions taking place daily at the Al Medaan Theatre in the Global Village will continue until February 2.
Great Prizes
Exciting prizes are in store for the competitors. First prize in every event is a Range Rover provided by Al Tayer Motors. In the falconry competitions, six Range Rovers will be given away as prizes. Cash prizes ranging from Dh30,000 to Dh5,000 will be awarded to the second prize winners. The audience will also get an opportunity to win exciting prizes in a raffle.
"Since its inception in 2002, we have been involved with the falconry competitions, but this year Al Tayer Motors will provide cars for the winners in the championship," said Nibal Mallak, marketing manager, Al Tayer Motors.
The main sponsor of the Al Fazz'a Championship is Dubai Islamic Bank. "We are committed to fulfilling our social responsibilities to the local community and our participation highlights the importance of the private sector in supporting social and cultural programmes. We are proud to be associated with the Al Fazz'a Championship because it showcases in the best way possible a beautiful part of our past and takes our traditional sports from the local to the international arena," said Ali Khalil Al Sayegh, vice-president, Dubai Zone Manager, Dubai Islamic Bank.
