Emirati schoolchildren are performing an array of shows daily at the Heritage Village. Fifty young boys and girls are displaying their talents, performing works which take them back to their Emirati roots.

Cultural inheritance

The boys stage the traditional dance with guns, also known as Al Youla. The boys have inherited this dance from their forefathers and it is traditionally performed to celebrate victory over an adversary. The attention of the crowd is fixated as the dancing boys fling their mock rifles in the air and catch them again without missing a beat of the traditional folk music.

The girls will then take to the stage, playing the traditional games of their grandmothers. They also perform the traditional female dance known as the Na'asha, in which they swing their long hair back and forth.

"I think it is wonderful to see the traditional dances of the UAE performed by children," said visitor Gillian Gray. "Not only does it teach us expatriates about the past, but it also helps the children keep a grip on their family roots and traditions."

The shows are staged daily at the Heritage Village from 5 to 8pm during the Dubai Shopping Festival.
