The growing developmental projects and an unceasing city life demand a steady power supply.
If it had not been for the crisscrossing electricity grids, the city would have ceased to operate.
Like any other modern city, electricity literally brings many things to life. The rapid increase in the population also made it eminent that power supply is continuously upgraded and expanded.
There are 12,567 substations generating electricity, serving a total of 308,616 customers. The total electricity generated comes to 19,327 gigawatt per hour.
In 2005, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) rolled out an expansion plan.
Major projects have been envisaged and a contract worth Dh7 billion have been signed to generate power to meet the growing demand.
An additional Dh13 billion is also expected to be invested, depending on the expansion of the real estate sector.
The responsibility of providing electricity was initially overseen by the Dubai Electric Company, which was established in 1959 to supervise the emirate’s electricity need.
In 1992, Dewa was established and has since then taken on the responsibility.
