On the eve of Tuesday 13 February 2007, Gulf News Editor-in-Chief Abdul Hamid Ahmed, addressed 24 Gulf News and Al Nisr Media photographers on a project entitled, A Day in the Life of Dubai. His brief: "Go out and capture the essence of Dubai in 24 hours."

So, the team of photographers embarked on capturing images. Each photographer committed at least 12 hours, roaming the emirate, primarily within the greater city limits. Together, the team covered almost 2,000 kilometres, taking 8,051 pictures.

From this pool of images, a team of Gulf News editors selected the cream of the crop, which we present for you. We hope the pictures epitomise the spirit of Dubai.

Meticulous planning was required to ensure that important areas of Dubai were covered. To achieve this we have many people to thank, especially for giving permission and opportunities to photograph areas that are generally off limits.

In truth, the planned picture opportunities were successful but the offbeat, unexpected, unscripted photos are the ones that inevitably steal the show.

It is physically impossible to cover every angle and every incident of a city in one day, even with a battalion of photographers.

It was a mammoth challenge to capture as much as was humanly possible in the 24 hours allocated for the project.

For that day, our aim was to freeze a slice of Dubai life so that in months, years and even decades to come, it will reflect how life in the emirate was on that particular day. Inevitably, for reasons mentioned above, some of the activities, incidents, events were missed or unseen by our team of photographers.

Nevertheless, we hope that the goal set by the Editor-in-Chief has been achieved. Final judgement depends on you, the reader.
