Dera Ismail Khan: Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesman announced yesterday that President Pervez Musharraf will travel next week to Belgium, France, Switzerland and Britain for talks with European leaders on a range of issues.

Musharraf will begin his France visit on January 21 before travelling to Davos where he will stay from January 23 to 25 and attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. He will also visit Britain from January 26 to 28.

Opposition leaders blame the former army general for the upsurge in extremist violence.

"The basic problem is that Musharraf is taking the nation toward destruction," said Nawaz Sharif, a leading opposition politician and former prime minister who was overthrown by Musharraf in 1999.

He called for a government of national unity to be formed to handle the crisis.
