Manama: Bahrain's health officials have called an alert over possible bird flu threat with the onset of cooler weather.

According to Gulf Daily News, the head of the Communicable Diseases Department of the Health Minisrty, Dr Muna Al Mousawi, has sounded caution over the greater risk of the virus entering the kingdom with the increased migration of birds in the winter months.

"Bahrain traditionally receives a huge number of these winged visitors and that makes us a bit more cautious in these months," she said according to the newspaper.

"The virus is also such that it thrives in the cold winter months."

Dr Al Mousawi also said a special ward was set up to March to receive possible bird flu patients although it was likely that Bahrain would remian free of the virus.
