Khartoum: An Arab League official said issues high on the 29th Arab Summit to be held on Tuesday include the Arab-Israeli conflict, Syrian-Lebanese relations and the civil war in Sudan's western region of Darfur. The summit, he told Gulf News, is to call on the international community to "respect the democratic choice" of the Palestinian people in light of the stunning election victory by Hamas, which last week announced its new Cabinet. "The Palestinian people should not be punished for exercising their democratic rights," Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak told Sudan's state news agency Suna yesterday. "We must also not prejudge the Hamas government's position. It should be given the opportunity to formulate its peace policies in accordance with the principles laid out by the international Quartet," he added.
