A group of Indian labourers who absconded from an Abu Dhabi based company said they were able to get their passports back from the employer thanks to the intervention of the Ministry of Labour.
Thomas, 48, from the south Indian state of Kerala said he and his nine friends approached the ministry as advised by the Indian Embassy, because the embassy did not succeed at getting the passports from the company.
"We gave written complaints to the ministry and the officials summoned the company officials. When ministry officials warned them that they would impose heavy fines on the company, the PROs showed up and gave us the passports," said Thomas.
He said they had absconded due to non payment of salary for three continuous months.
"We worked in a construction site in Musaffa for one year and later found work in various companies in Dubai and Sharjah after absconding," said Lopas, one of the group members.
