Abu Dhabi: The amnesty given by the Cabinet to illegal workers has achieved its goals, with 176,000 workers adjusting their status, said Dr Ali Bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, Minister of Labour.
Al Ka'abi said the labour ministry is coordinating with the interior ministry to implement stringent measures against all violators of the residency law.
The support extended by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to the ministries to conduct inspections will enable them to comb out all the illegal immigrants.
Al Ka'abi stressed that the presence of illegal workers in the country would lead to negative impacts on the UAE society, as they bring in practices totally strange to the country's traditions.
Al Ka'abi noted that the ministry faced difficult situations as a result of law violations, which include lack of commitment to work contracts, the overstay of workers after the expiry of work permits, absconding, working illegally with other employers, employing runaway workers and sheltering them.
He acknowledged the private sector's role in making the amnesty a success, adding that the cooperation between companies and establishments resulted in adjusting the situations of over 176,000 workers in a short span of time.
He urged companies to maintain proper records of their workers and make sure that there are no violations.
