Baghdad: Al Qaida in Iraq named the successor to Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, saying he would continue the campaign of attacks against Shiites and US and Iraqi forces.
Abu Hamza Al Muhajer was named as the new leader of Iraqi Al Qaida. Very little is known about him, as he has never been mentioned in relation to Al Qaida or appeared on any US lists of terrorists.
The fact that the new leader is unknown suggests the group is taking extra precautions in light of the killing of Al Zarqawi. It is likely that Al Muhajer is either a lower level figure, or a more prominent member who has taken a new name to conceal his identity.
A statement was posted on an Islamic militant web forum frequently used by Al Qaida. It described Al Muhajer as "a beloved brother with jihadi experience and a strong footing in knowledge," although the authenticity of the statement has not yet been confirmed.
The statement said, "Al Qaida in Iraq's council has agreed on Sheik Abu Hamza Al Muhajer to be the successor of Abu Musab Al Zarqawi in the leadership of the organisation."
US President George W Bush said the new leader would immediately be in the sights of US military, as they continue to target insurgent leaders.
He said, "I think the successor to Zarqawi is going to be on our list to bring to justice."
Speaking at Camp David after a day of talks with security officials, he emphasised the need for the US to target insurgents.
"No question the fighting is tough, no question the enemy is violent and mean, but the enemy doesn't stand for anything. I keep reminding the American people that the stakes are worth it," he added.
The appointment of a new leader comes almost a week after US troops attacked the safe house where Al Zarqawi was hiding.
