Islands dot the city, providing a contrast in living styles as well as a welcome haven to get away from the pressures of every-day life. This shot of Mid Island and Raha Beach shows just what an array of natural beauty is on offer for the capital's residents.

But the islands provide more than just a get-away venue. They are also vital to the city's trade and provide a commercial canal to harness global trade opportunities.

Yas Island occupies a total land area of 2,500 hectares and is being developed by Aldar Properties. It will feature a world-class motor sports racetrack, signature hotels, a Ferrari theme park as well as golf courses, a marina and residential complex.

Al Reem Island is the site of a commercal and business project and is being developed by Sorouh (Shams Abu Dhabi), Reem Investments and Tamouh.

Saadiyat Island will see a DHS 100 billion commercial, residential and leisure project emerge and will be, according to government officials, the capital's cultural centre when completed in 2018.
