PLO leader calls for Egypt's suspension

Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat implicitly called for the suspension or expulsion of Egypt from the Non-aligned movement, which is holding its sixth summit in Havana.

Speaking on a day when Egyptian President Anwar Sadat began an official visit to Israel, Arafat called on the summit to isolate the partner of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.

Sadat, Begin agree and disagree

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin announced agreement on oil supplies and the supervision of Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai desert. But disagreements were still very apparent on Palestinian autonomy and the status of mainly Arab inhabited east Jerusalem.

London's most solemn funeral

Britain said farewell to Earl Mountbatten, first member of the Royal family to be assassinated by Irish guerrillas, with the most solemn funeral seen in London since Churchill in 1965. Kings, admirals and generals from all over the world assembled for a ceremony reflecting Lord Mountbatten's career as an allied leader in World war Two, a major figure of the British empire as last Viceroy of India, and head of Britain's armed forces in peace.

Vance on Soviet presence

Secretary of State Cyrus Vance said the United States cannot tolerate the continued presence in Cuba of a Soviet combat brigade numbering between 2,000 to 3,000 men.

45 swim records at Tokyo meet

Forty-five records, including a world record by Cynthia Woodhead of the United States, were bettered in the first World Cup swimming meeting in Tokyo from September 1 to 3. The 45 national records involved 12 nations, who represented teams from five nations and three regional groups.
