China opens door to foreign capital

China published its first law allowing foreign companies to invest capital in the world's most populous country and get their profits out. The 15-article code, adopted by the national People's Congress on July 1, permits foreign firms to enter into joint ventures with Chinese companies. But western experts said the new law was much tighter than expected, and that some points in the code were vague.

Forghen guerrillas get another victim

An opponent of the exiled Shah of Iran, Haj Taqi Tarkhani, was shot outside his home and died on his way to hospital. Tarkhani was shot three times last night. His attackers escaped by motorcycle leaving behind leaflets claiming responsibility for the shooting in the name of the Forghan Moslem guerrilla group.

Another Voyager II vendezvous with Jupiter

Voyager 2 sails past distant Jupiter and should return thousands more of the colourful and mystifying pictures that caught the world’s imagination four months ago. The second Voyager, identical to the 1,800 pound sistership that preceded it, has been soaring through space for nearly two years. Still 4.3 million miles from Jupiter, the ship already is sending back pictures of the planet.

Soviets explode another N-device

Soviet Union exploded a Nuclear device at its underground Siberian test site, the Energy Department has reported. "Seismic signals, presumably from a Soviet underground nuclear explosion, were recorded by the US Atomic Detection system late last night," the department said in a statement.
