Insurance in Iran taken over by state

Iran nationalised all private insurance companies, including seven with foreign capital, in a move hailed by the influential Muslim clergy as another step towards the country's freedom and independence. The Secret Council of the revolution, believed to consist almost entirely of senior Muslim clergymen by ordering the government to take over Iran's 11 private insurance companies.

NATO chief escapes life attempt

NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe General Alexander Haig escaped an assassination attempt when a remote-controlled land mine exploded under his car. General Haig, who was not hurt, was being driven from his home in Lyon to his office at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE) at Casteau, south of Brussels.

Whole village burned down in race riots

Twenty-seven people have been killed in three days of Hindu-Muslim riots in the Nadia district of West Bengal, Chief Minister Jyoti Basu has said. Basu said 633 houses had been burned down, including about 250 in a single village.

Desai calls out the Army

At least three men were killed in battles between troops and police after Indian Premier Morarji Desai ordered in the army to break a wave of police strikes. The fighting erupted in New Delhi and at Bokaro in Northern Bihar State as hundreds of soldiers moved in to arrest the striking policemen.
