Egypt's suspension was unanimous

A conference of Islamic Foreign Ministers decided to suspend Egypt from membership of the 43 member organisation. The decision, taken at the meeting's first plenary session, was unanimous. Officials said the motion to suspend Egypt s membership was tabled by Libya.

Dubai port sets all time record

Dubai’s Port Rashid achieved an all time record in container cargo handling last month. According to the General Manager of the Dubai Port Services, Capt. Arthur Jarman, the container cargo handled during the month of April amounted to 18,825 Twenty foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). "This is the highest figure on record," he said.

Rare brain operation for first time in Gulf

A rare and difficult operation to relieve a brain haemorrhage in a patient crippled as a result of a motorcycle accident was done at the Jazeerah hospital in Abu Dhabi. It was believed to be the first such operation in the Gulf area. The operation was successful in helping the patient to recover loss of his limbs. He responded to the treatment after two hours.

Pork sales banned in Abu Dhabi

The importing and selling of pork and pork derivatives is totally banned in Abu Dhabi in keeping with local order number 1 of 1978. The Abu Dhabi municipality which is responsible for implementing the order, informed companies and commercial houses to abide by the order.

Special courts to try Indira approved

India's Lower House of Parliament has approved a bill setting up special courts to try ex-Premier Indira Gandhi and others for alleged offences during her 21-month emergency rule.

Liverpool are champs again

Liverpool finally clinched the English soccer championship when they swept to a commanding 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. It was the third time in four years that manager Bob Paisley has steered Liverpool to the title.
