The Bolivian army had seized control in a bloodless coup that ended the four-month old government of General Juan Pereda. "We have taken over command of the country temporarily with the purpose of creating the Bolivia that was dreamed of by generations of Bolivians," an army communique said.
Army Commander General David Padilla Arancibial promised to hold national elections and transfer power to a civilian government by August of next year.
Troops kill 15 in Iran
Imperial troops have killed at least 15 people and wounded scores more in bloody clashes with protesters in the southern city of Shiraz.
Sources said the killings, the worst outbreak of violence in recent days, occurred over the last three days. Meanwhile Shah has released 267 political prisoners in Teheran in his bid to defuse the continuing violent opposition to his 37-year reign and which government leaders say threatens complete anarchy in the strategic oil-rich nation.
Rhodesia extends martial law
Rhodesia slapped martial law on another 10 per cent of the country, bringing almost three-quarters of its territory under military control in the war with black nationalist guerrillas.
The breakaway British colony's government imposed army discipline on large areas of tribal land in the northeast close to the Mozambique border as the white-led security forces fought to stem the advancing tide of the guerrillas.

Third refugee boat sinks off Malaysia
A third Vietnamese boat has capsized within 48 hours, but all but three of the 217 refugees on board managed to swim ashore to safety. The bodies of two of the three people who died were recovered, police sources said.
There was no indication as to how the boat capsized but the sea in the area was reported to have been rough and the boat was near the shore when it sank, a boat with about 250 people hit a sandbank. Five more bodies were found yesterday bringing the number of bodies found to 100.
