America freezes peace talks

The United States has frozen the Israeli-Egyptian negotiations on a peace treaty while Washington awaits a letter from Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to US President Jimmy Carter.

The US State Department is meanwhile analysing the Israeli and Egyptian positions, which include "far-reaching changes" in the draft worked out by the two sides prior to the Israeli delegation's return home last week. The Americans would prepare a new draft treaty to bridge the differences separating the two sides once Begin's letter arrives in Washington.
 
Chaos as military waits in the wings

Recurring political unrest and crippling strikes by government workers plague the reconciliation government of Iranian Prime Minister Jaafar Sharif-Emami.

Meanwhile, efforts to dampen spiralling chaos and ward off a possible military take-over are being stepped up. Thousands of anti-government dissidents in recent days surged repeatedly through the cities of Hamadan, Gorgan and Khorramabad setting fire to banks and cinemas and battling security forces.

Gomez retains crown

World Boxing Council super-bantam champion Wilfredo Gomez has retained his crown with a fifth-round technical knockout over bantam champion Charlos Zarate of Mexico at San Juan's Roberto Clemente Stadium.

Zarate, who moved up in division because of weight problems as knocked down twice in the fourth round before the Gomez onslaught. The referee stopped the bout 44 seconds into the seconds into the fifth round after Govez knocked Zarate to the canvas once again.
