Mass arrests of Bhutto supporters

The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) of ousted Premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto said 10,000 of its members had been arrested by police this month to prevent mass action.

A spokesman of the party's central committee attacked a recent presidential ordinance from military ruler General Zia-Ul-Haq which, it said, indicated the PPP was about to be banned. The party also criticised censorship imposed on pro-Bhutto newspapers, which has provoked a three-day strike by nine dailies, including the PPP organ Musawat.

Peace talks are stalled

The Middle East peace talks have come to a halt and the heads of the Israeli delegation have been summoned back to Occupied Jerusalem for consultation about issues that have apparently stalled completion of a treaty with Egypt.

Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan said he and Defence Minister Ezer Weizman have been told to return by the Israeli Cabinet for three days of meetings.

200 taxis confiscated

More than 200 taxis have been "confiscated" and their drivers imprisoned in Abu Dhabi for overcharging passengers.

The drivers who will spend 48 hours in prison have also been banned from driving for a month. They were all found to be overcharging passengers when plain clothes policemen mounted two days campaign.
