Miraculously there were no serious injuries. One man was taken to hospital in Sharjah with a broken leg and two other people were treated for minor injuries at the Kuwaiti Hospital in Dubai. The crash occurred at about 6.45 am as commuter traffic began to build up. An eyewitness described the scene as the fog began to clear as one of "absolute devastation." Cars and lorries were strewn all over both carriageways of the road and the central reservation. The accident happened about midway between Dubai and Sharjah.

A GIFT from outer space was presented to the Ruler of Dubai as he presided over the topping out ceremony of the Galadari Corniche complex.
His Highness Shaikh Rashid Bin Said Al Maktoum received a photograph of the Gulf taken from more than 100 miles in space by former astronaut Walter Cunningham. Mr Cunningham, who once walked on the moon, is now a vice president of 3D International of Houston, the firm of designers and consultants on the Corniche project.

It's all over for Korchnoi
DISTRAUGHT challenger Viktor Korchnoi conceded the world chess crown to champion Anatoly Karpov. And he charged the Soviet Union with putting him under severe psychological pressure before last night's showdown 32nd game.
Korchnoi even refused to sign the scoresheet - which acknowledges the score is accurate - and said he would not attend the closing ceremonies. Korchnoi, who had made a stunning comeback to level the series at five all in he search for six wins, crumbled before a relentless onslaught from Karpov and was in a hopeless position when the match adjourned on the 41st move.
