Lucy Liu shot to fame in the hit series Ally McBeal. Now our favourite Angel returns to her TV roots with Cashmere Mafia.

From the creator of Sex And The City comes TV's newest, most sizzling show yet, starring everyone's favourite Angel Lucy Liu in the leading role of Mia Mason.

Debuting on Showtime's Showseries from May 20, Cashmere Mafia is, as the promoters like to call it, "a compelling, intimate and unflinching look at an ensemble of high-powered women whose most valuable assets are their friendship and their willingness to have it all – without giving an inch."

Dubbed the thinking woman's Sex and The City mixed with The Devil Wears Prada, this one-hour drama focuses on four women who must deal with problems and issues both in the bedroom and the boardroom, and through it all, always, always maintain their fabulousity and friendship.

Bringing sexy back

If that sounds like most women's life stories, it's because it probably is. Which is also the reason a big screen hottie like Lucy chose to make her television comeback with this series.

If the motto of the show is to bring sexy back, Lucy is a key player towards achieving that dream. The actress arrived for the auditions last year and jumped headfirst into living the part of Mia Mason. To begin with, she helped picked the name for her character. In an interview Lucy says, "Mia is a little more international. She could be Asian or Hispanic."

And there lies her charm. It's hard to put your finger on her. She could be anyone, everyone, or no one, depending on how you view her. And with the global culture of the world today, a girl who's the perfect blend of various ethnic backgrounds makes for the most appealing, alluring leading lady on TV.

In a PR interview at the start of the show, the big-wigs of Cashmere Mafia put up a united front supporting Lucy saying, "Lucy Liu is a big pull as she has an impressive film career starring in Kill Bill, Charlie's Angels, etc, so therefore, she already comes with a big fan base."

Leading ladies

Our four lead Mafioso are Mia (Liu), Zoe (Frances O'Connor), Juliet (Miranda Otto) and Caitlin (Bonnie Somerville).

Mia, the head publisher of Barnstead Media, is a woman so driven to succeed that she ends up getting her fiancé fired and returns to the single life once again.

Zoe is the Managing Director of Mergers and Acquisitions at an investment bank, with a loyal work-at-home architect husband who raises their two children.

However, the stress of juggling work and family is taking its toll on her, so much so that even her kids totally misinterpret her role as mommy.

Juliet is the Chief Operating Officer of a major hotel chain. Although she appears to have the perfect life, all that is soon shattered when she finds out that her husband's been having an affair.

Caitlin is Senior VP for Marketing for a cosmetics firm and although all appears normal on the outside, she still hasn't figured out her personal life. With plenty of problems in that area, including a crush on another woman, Caitlin has a lot on her plate.

As a result, these four ambitious and sexy best friends have formed a female "boys club", a unit to support and counsel each oher through good times and bad.

And, as is the case in real life, these women too have to use all the style, smarts and appeal they possess to keep outpacing their male colleagues and husbands in salary and title. They also have to watch out for scheming women eager to bring them down.

Fortunately, there's strength in numbers. And when you've formed a team as formidable as the Cashmere Mafia, failure is a word that's been erased from the dictionary.
