A pampered chihuahua, a soft-hearted German Shepherd, a lovable little pooch ... what's going on with Beverly Hills Chihuahua? Has the movie gone to the dogs?
When Disney decides to make a movie with animals, which is quite often the case, they go all out to ensure that those animals are lovable, and then some.
So naturally, when making a movie about man's best friend, albeit it a very Paris Hilton version of man's best friend, we're not surprised that the filmmakers managed to find the cutest, most adorable pooches in the industry as top billers.
Although the human cast includes the likes of Piper Perabo, Jamie Lee Curtis and Manolo Cardonna, it's the four-legged stars that are the real heroes.
Voiced by Drew Barrymore, the movie revolves around Chloe, a pampered, blinged-out bootie-wearing Beverly Hills chihuahua. Chloe enjoys her easy life so much that she doesn't really care for anyone other than herself, not even the lovable Papi (voiced by George Lopez), a macho chihuahua who is hopelessly, head-over-paws in love with her.
Spoilt to the hilt and accustomed to riding in a designer purse all her life, Chloe, while accompanying her owner on a spa vacation in Mexico, finds herself accidentally lost in the city's mean streets.
Alone for the first time in her pampered life, Chloe realises that she has to rely on her newfound friends if she is to find her way back. Naturally, one of those friends is the adorable Papi who heads down south to rescue his pampered pooch.
Also part of the motley crew she assembles is a street-hardened German Shepherd named Delgado (voiced by Andy Gardia) who was kicked off the police force because he lost his sense of smell and has now given up on life. Along for the ride are two humans (Perabo and Cardona), a sly rat (voiced by Cheech Marin) and a nervous iguana (Paul Rodrigue).
Together, they need to make Chloe find the inner strength required to face facts, accept the less-privileged and eventually make her way back home.
MPAA Rating: PG for some mild thematic elements.
