Kuwait: The workers' union at Kuwait's state oil refinery on Wednesday called for a strike at the Kuwait National Petroleum Co. (KNPC), demanding better pay and staff promotions.

Some 3,000 workers are expected to go on strike, a union official said, but it was not clear what the actual effect would be on the refinery's production.

"It's an open strike until all our demands are met," Mohammad Al Hamlan, the union's deputy chairman said.

KNPC spokesman Mohammad Al Ajmi had no immediate comment on the strike.

In a statement, the KNPC Labour Syndicate's board of directors called on its workers to stage a total strike and congregate at KNPC headquarters on Sunday morning.

The union said it wanted better pay and more promotions for its staff.

"The call for this strike ... came after several negotiations and series of meetings with the management of the company... and unfortunately we did not find a solution," the statement read.
