Dubai: A children's fashion week is being held at Dubai Festival City as part of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS).

It is part of the Modhesh Friends Club summer programme, and aims at increasing levels of self-confidence in the children participating.

Other activities in the Modhesh Friends Club include art, music workshops and day trips.

The fashion week began on Thursday with some of the biggest names in the industry showcasing the latest collections at Festival City, a key sponsor of DSS this year and a member of the Dubai Shopping Malls Group.

The opening of the event was attended by Ebrahim Saleh, general coordinator of DSF Office and a host of dignitaries and fashion enthusiasts.

"DSS organises Kids Fashion Week as part of its commitment to cater to a diverse audience, apart from hosting a recognised fashion event that has set high standards for itself," Saleh said.

"In its sixth edition this year, Kids Fashion Week sees the participation of some of the biggest names in children's fashion, which is a testament to the popularity of the event. Children's wear is a major industry in the world today and while the brands featured this year showcase diversified collections, Kids Fashion Week provides an ideal platform for these labels and designers to target niche audiences," he added.

Members of the Modhesh Friends Club were the centre of attraction for the evening as they donned the 2008 Summer collection of United Colors of Benetton in the opening show of the event.

The half-hour display was followed by the collections of Sisley, the trend-setting brand of the Benetton Group.

The 2008 Benetton summer collection was launched in June and was described as being inspired by the childish freedom to wear, to interpret, to choose, to move about, and to play.
