Islamabad: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is not preparing to resign despite ample speculation, his spokesman and the army said on Thursday.

Rumours that the South Asian country’s chief was close to quitting have been strife, and were one of the factors for recent decline in Karachi’s stock market.

A leading newspaper highlighted a meeting between Musharraf and army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, furthering the speculation.

But on Thursday, Musharraf’s spokesman said: “Neither has there been any discussion of the president moving out of the President's Lodge, nor is there any plan for him to do so," rebutting the report.

A military statement also said Kayani was disappointed that the press would “unnecessarily sensationalise routine functional matters".
