Dubai: A new intra-city public transport bus service on three routes will start in Sharjah in May, Gulf News has learnt.
The Sharjah Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) will start the service with 25 buses on three routes while more buses will be added later this year. There is a plan to run a total of 142 buses on 18 routes covering different areas in the emirate.
There will be a fixed fare of Dh3 on all the three routes. The buses will operate from 5am to 11.30 pm, confirmed an SPTC official. He said the number of routes will be increased with the arrival of the new buses.
The main bus terminal will be at Al Ittihad Square in Rolla, which is also used for the inter-emirates bus service. The bus, which has a capacity for 49 passengers with 32 seats, has been designed to cater to people with special needs.
When fully operational, more than 80,000 people are expected to use the service.
Meanwhile, residents in Sharjah have welcomed the move. "It will be a great relief because it is a nightmare to get a taxi in the city," said Jashmeed Ali, a resident in Abu Shagara.
Routes: Airport to be covered
- From Al Ittihad Square bus station to Al Nahda area station
- From Sharjah International Airport to Al Sharq bus stand
- From Al Wasit Bus Station to Al Taawun Bus Station

A big thank you to all the concerned people for this great move. This service should cover more residential areas as well as roads like Al Wahda Street, City Centre, Al Falah Plaza, and mosque and church areas.

This will be good for public commuters, but this will create havoc in traffic as these relatively big vehicles will be travelling in an area that is already congested.

Well, I agree that some improvements should be implemented on the road network in Sharjah. Otherwise, I am really happy to know that there will be a bus service in Sharjah finally. I would recommend frequent timings, like every 10 or 15 minutes in all bus stops.

I hope the new bus routes would include the National Paint roundabout. It is very hard to look for taxis in that area.

It is a positive decision for many passengers. I think it would reduce traffic to some extent, which would help the neighbouring emirates also.

It's a great initiative by Sharjah Public Transport Corporation. It will be very helpful for the residents to travel to different parts of the city. Once it is implemented, the residents can feel the difference. I wish all the success for this great move.

This is a really good decision and I do recommend the daily bus service to operate in the industrial area (Interchange No. 8 on Dhaid Road), because thousands of people are living there and are having difficulty getting transportation
