United Nations: Russia's UN ambassador on Monday urged Iran to stop opposing talks with nations trying to determine if its nuclear programme is peaceful, stressing that negotiations are the only way to resolve the dispute.

The six countries, USA, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, offered Iran political, security and economic incentives if it halts its uranium enrichment program, a deal which Iran has since refused.

Iran rejected a third round of sanctions imposed on March 3 for defying the Security Council's demand to suspend enrichment, and saying it will only deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear watchdog.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said at a news conference Monday that the only way to resolve the standoff is through talks, adding that Iran’s “statements of a negative nature towards the negotiations are certainly not helpful and not constructive.“
