Dubai Municipality has come in behind the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) by suggesting cars 10 years old or more should not be on the roads. Both the municipality and the RTA think that old cars cause traffic delays and are a major contributor to air pollution. However, the original RTA proposal was shelved when it was realised there would be economic losses to the industry.
Surely it must be acknowledged that as with people, so with vehicles: it is not the age that is important but the fitness. Vintage and veteran collectors' vehicles are still able to make the grade. And there are many vehicles more than 10 years old able to pass muster.
If Dubai Municipality and the RTA are so keen to ensure fitness for purpose of vehicles on the road, then it is time to introduce tougher annual tests for vehicles, especially those past the proposed "sell-by" date.
