Riyadh: An agreement to curb cyber crime against women has been signed by the Saudi National Human Rights Society.

The campaign, called I am a Human Being is the brainchild of Reem Mohammad Abu Eid of the Social Active Campaign.

"The campaign has already started its mission by notifying a number of websites that placed images and clippings of young Saudi women in a bad way. Most of the sites responded positively and deleted the images from their sites," she said.

The society was represented in signing the deal by Jawhara Al Anqari, deputy president of the society for domestic affairs, and the Social Active Campaign was represented by Reem at a a ceremony held in Jeddah on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, Reem said the campaign was aimed at giving full protection to young women who face any sort of threats or blackmail attempts.

Blackmail attempts

"We lend both psychological and legal support to any woman if she informs us about being subjected to any sort of threat or blackmailing attempt, either by placing pictures or clippings on websites," she said, adding confidentiality was promised.

"We will also tackle the culprits, in coordination with the concerned agencies, by having closed door meetings with them with the aim of counselling them and getting told about the actual provocation for committing these crimes," she said.

Reem added the campaign will also strive to implement the cyber law enacted by Saudi Arabia last year that consists of 16 provisions.

These include a one-year jail term or fines up to 500,000 Saudi riyals (Dh500,000) for those found guilty of committing cyber crimes.

"Our campaign is also aimed at spreading the provisions of this law to deter people from committing such crimes," she added.
