Dubai: Police's Traffic Department issued more than 3,000 traffic fines using Multimedia Messaging Service of mobile phones.
Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, director of the department, said the system of using mobile phones to issue fines electronically was launched by the Chief of Dubai Police and the system is considered a qualitative leap in providing fast electronic services and supporting traffic police's job.
The method saves time and effort compared to issuing paper fines.
Tech savvy
He said the department issued a total of 3,126 fines using mobile phones.
The traffic police use mobile phones to take digital pictures or videos of offending cars, especially for offences such as jumping red signals, parking in places allocated for people with special needs and other offences.
Major Saif Al Mazroui, acting deputy director of the department, said the service was only confined to traffic police officers in its first phase.
The department will provide the service for all the department's employees soon.
He said the system provides the offenders with information of the fine through a text message on their mobile phones or their e-mails.
The information includes time of the fine, type and the fine amount.
Major Al Mazroui said the system is considered the first of its kind in the world. It is a fast system which will help delete the paper fines system.
The picture can also be used as a legal document to prove the offence.
