What an extraordinary situation: Dubai driving instructors complain the tests imposed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are too tough and that too many candidates fail.
One driving school estimated that approximately 10 per cent of applicants passed, leaving learner drivers demoralised and out of pocket as they had to take more lessons and more tests to eventually pass and get a driving licence.
Instead of complaining that the tests are too tough, driving instructors should be looking to their own standards and determining whether they are up to the new requirements of the RTA.
It is acknowledged by many that for too long driving standards in the emirates have been extremely variable, thereby increasing the possibility of accidents occurring. It was determined by the RTA, when it took over the authority for the driving tests, that previous test standards were inadequate and would be reviewed.
Instead of adjusting to the new policy, driving instructors complain the old test was much easier for candidates to pass and so should be reintroduced.
But isn't that exactly the point? Rather than make a fuss in this way, instructors should encourage and support the RTA in its attempts to make roads safer in Dubai.
