Dubai: A visitor has been cleared of possessing and promoting counterfeit dollars with which he tried to purchase goods in a supermarket, for lack of criminal intent.

The Public Prosecution charged the 41-year-old Pakistani, identified as S.Z., of possessing a fake $100 note (Dh367).

Dubai Court of First Instance acquitted him after the judge decided that he was unaware that the note was fake.

He was arrested after a 28-year-old Filipina cashier refused to collect the counterfeit note with which he tried to purchase some merchandise.

The Filipina, identified as M.L., said in her statement: "The suspect walked up to the cashier and wanted to pay for some products. He took out $400 [about Dh1,440] in notes from his wallet and passed them on to me. One of the notes was very clearly and unprofessionally faked."

The cashier said she asked the defendant to wait while she examined the genuineness of the note.

Handed over

The cashier informed her boss and handed him over the note.

It was examined with a special detector and the note turned out to be a fake. The police were summoned and arrested the suspect who said that he did not know that the note was a fake. The visitor claimed that he got the note during daily business transactions.
