Jakarta: A 30-year-old woman Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, bringing the death toll in the country to 90.

The woman, who was in contact with sick poultry, was hospitalised in Tangerang on October 30 and transferred to a Jakarta hospital a day later. Suharda Ningrum, from the ministry's bird flu information centre confirmed that the woman had tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

Erna Trisnaningsih, the ministry's director of control of animal-borne disease, said officials were coordinating with district leaders in Tangerang to boost prevention measures and public awareness.

Indonesia has suffered the highest number of bird flu cases – 112 of which 90 have been fatal.
