Abu Dhabi: US First Lady Laura Bush arrived in Abu Dhabi on Sunday at the start of a Middle East tour to highlight the fight against breast cancer.

She will visit several cancer treatment and screening centres and launch new cancer awareness activities in the region, her spokeswoman Sally McDonough said yesterday. The anti-breast cancer campaign organised at the national level will begin this morning.

Held under the patronage of Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the UAE General Women's Union and honorary president of the National Committee to Combat Breast Cancer, the campaign is being conducted by the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi and the Ministry of Health.

Laura Bush, US First Lady, will attend the launch of the campaign. The campaign, under the slogan 'Break the ice, discover it and save your life', will run for a month. The campaign aims to increase public awareness about the disease, educate women on the importance of early detection, and encourage them to get tested.

Dr Rawdah Abdullah Al Mutaweh, Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Breast Cancer, said that the campaign aims to spread awareness about the dangers of the fatal disease.
